Karma Thegsum Chöling

Words from an American Lama

Visiting KTC

Karma Thegsum Chöling, or KTC Minneapolis, is located at 4301 Morningside Road, Minneapolis, MN 55416.

However, we ask that you call before visiting. Visiting the Monastery is normally by appointment only. You can reach KTC at 952-926-5048.

KTC is a very traditional monastery and we ask that you observe correct etiquette when visiting.

Protocol

If you are interested in receiving instruction in meditation and Buddhist practices, you should call to inquire about regularly scheduled classes. Please be aware that not all students are accepted. It is important to talk with Lama La in advance to discuss your specific needs and why you wish to pursue meditation.

If you have hardship in your life and wish to request guidance, you may also call to schedule a private meeting with the lama.

For all visits, it is traditional to bring an offering of money to help support the lama and the work she does.

Shrine Room Etiquette & Meeting a Lama

Visitors are asked to be respectful when meeting a lama or entering a Buddhist shrine room. You can read about proper etiquette here, thanks to our parent organization Karma Triyana Darmachakra.

If you need a kata to present to the lama, you can acquire one at the Tibet Store in uptown Minneapolis.

Donations

Your support of KTC helps us work on behalf of the spiritual, emotional, and intellectual wellbeing of our community. There are several types of donations that are very common:

  • An offering made as a gift when visiting the lama. Typically, a gift of $50 for a one hour meeting is standard.
  • Tuition for meditation classes. Students are asked to donate a gift of $100 per month.
  • Sponsoring a student. Donors sometimes choose to donate to underwrite tuition for one or more students. This is an excellent way to strengthen the community and foster the dharma in Minneapolis.
  • Sponsoring a butter lamp. Typically, a gift is made of $10 for a three-day lamp, $30 for a ten-day lamp, or $75 for a 49-day lamp.

These offerings are all baseline amounts. Visitors with greater means should consider giving at a higher level. A donation to a monastery is a generous act of compassion that benefits the larger community. As such, it is an excellent way to generate positive karma.

You can donate through PayPal here or simply bring your donation with you when you visit.

Volunteering

KTC Minneapolis is building a community garden. If you would like to support the community, time spent working in the garden is a beautiful gift. A single day of help or one afternoon per month are both welcome. If you would like to volunteer please call 952-926-5048.
