Ven. Bardor Tulku Rinpoche Visits KTC Minneapolis by Stu Webb
On October 13th and 14,our Center had the privilege of hosting two days of instruction by Ven Bardor Tulku Rinpoche and his excellent translator Lama Yeshe Gyamtso.
Neither Rinpoche nor Lama Yeshe are strangers to our Centers. We can generally count on one of these wonderful visits each Fall.
Prior to each visit, we have the ability to request certain teachings, and it's one of the marvels that Rinpoche is able to present cogent instruction on whatever subjects we have requested!
This year we asked Rinpoche to teach on Buddhist Vows. Three categories of vows were described and elaborated upon: namely:
- The Lay Ordination Vows
- Vow not to kill another human
- Vow not to steal
- Vow not to commit adultery
- Vow not to lie
- Vow not to use alcohol or other intoxicants.
- The Eight Precepts of Mahayana (24 hour vows)
- First five more refined versions of Lay Ordination Vows
- Vow against exalted states
- Vow to fast after noon
- Vow not to wear personal adornment or sing or dance.
- Bodhisattva Vows
- Vow to develop bodhicitta by practicing the Six Paramitas (generosity, morality and ethics, patience, exertion, meditative stability and wisdom) and develop love, compassion and mindfulness.
- Vow to do one’s practices for the benefit of all sentient beings.
Having had all of the vows explained in a delightful manner and with much interesting interchange between Rinpoche and his translator, we took the vows we each desired to take.
A powerful and personally moving experience.
